The Space In Between

ARTIST STATEMENT:

My work for the Space in Between project explores the area between reality and fiction. The aim is to abstract the elements of the subject and work with the resulting lines, shapes, forms, colors. Sometimes the primary subject is not identifiable. Often the images have a minimalist feel to them. Yet no matter how abstract some images appear, they all contain at least a bit of reality, a focal point. These anchor points give the viewer’s eye a starting point before it wanders off to explore the rest of the image.

My interpretation of the Space in Between stemmed from an assignment to “shoot one thing”. After discarding many possibilities, I decided to photograph one of the most basic of shapes – an egg. The first attempts were straight forward (and boring!). In these early attempts, however, I was drawn to the contrast between the egg and its carton. The rough intricate texture of the carton compared to the smooth surface of the egg provided its own Space in Between. Looking for more ways to imagine an egg led to exploring the use of light to provide dynamic interest to the compositions.

Peer reviews of these early stages were positive, but the primary take-away was, “keep going”. The final series of images finally started to take shape after days of procrastination. This last set contains multiple Spaces in Between - the interplay between light and shadow, and the physical space between broken eggshells.

As you view my images, perhaps you’ll find your own Spaces in Between

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Kent Shaw is a photographic artist living in Elmore, Vermont. He started his career in music education and was a high school band director for ten years. While still teaching, his interest in technology led him first to recording studios, which quickly lead to a stint doing television audio for professional sports. This was followed by many years in various aspects of Information Technology. He and his wife Jean, moved to Vermont in the mid 2000s and after a few years of telecommuting from his home in Elmore he retired in 2008.

He first started photography in the early 1980's as a hobby, but time for photography was limited by work demands. Following the introduction of digital cameras he experimented with various point-n-shoot cameras and made the switch to Digital SLRs in 2007. He has been shooting non-stop ever since.

Nature, landscapes (both day and night), and macro (close-up) photography are his primary interests. Recently he has taken to producing high contrast black and white images.

Kent has taught numerous photography related classes at River Arts in Morrisville, VT. The subjects of his classes were night photograph, flower/macro, photo organization, and Photoshop classes.
