The Hidden Line

PROJECT STATEMENT:

In a previous life, I was a mathematician. Shapes and forms, angles and proportions have always made sense to me. Now, as an artist, I continue to be drawn to shapes and forms as pure abstractions. I especially love to experiment with reflective, shiny parts and pieces that mirror the surroundings in unexpected ways. They result in visual puzzles and illusions.

When I began my search this winter for a new source for abstractions, I remembered that Goodrich’s Maple Farm, an equipment design and supply source for maple sugar makers, harbored a wealth of shapes and reflections. Some may have seen barns filled with hoses and other industrial-type equipment. I saw something quite different. I was enchanted with reflections of the sky and snow in metal pans outside; captivated by the boxes stacked in the barn ready to be filled with syrup; fascinated with hoses used in the reverse osmosis machine, and dazzled by the wire and tubing ready to bring the sap to the sugar house. But I was surprised to find a singular line uniting and defining it all---not to divide the shapes but to unite them. The hidden line brought all these images together for me in creating this body of work.

I’m particularly grateful to the Goodrich family for their gracious welcome to my idea of searching for unexpected shapes and for allowing me to freely prowl the premises of their extensive operation:

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Rosalind Daniels grew up in Richmond, Virginia.  She has been a fiber artist for many years and has recently returned to her early interest in photography now that digital photography has simplified photo production.  The immediacy of photography strikes her as a perfect balance to the slower process of creating quilts. Her home in rural Cabot, Vermont provides her constant inspiration as the seasons and landscapes continuously offer interesting shapes and varying palettes for exploration, while her urban travels never cease to surprise her.

Roz has recently exhibited at Studio Place Arts in Barre, VT and Waterbury Public Library in Waterbury, VT.
You can see her fiber art here.
