Black Velvet

PROJECT STATEMENT:

My first step in preparation for composing and photographing these still lifes was to haul out my grandmother’s card table.  It’s a tough old card table that withstood fifty plus years of competitive bridge. I then placed black velvet on the card table. I gathered objects, many of which are family heirlooms. These include my mother’s bisque dolls from when she was a girl in the 1920’s, and my great-great grandmother Drusilla’s play pewter set from when she was a girl in the 1840’s. Other objects I gathered from walks in the woods and at the grocery store—I occasionally resorted to Etsy and Ebay.

And then I felt like a girl at play again, arranging the characters and objects, and photographing them.
